I never thought about how this could be such an expressive experience for students especially those who struggled to communicate through text. Because I naturally LOVE to write and feel very comfortable with my words, but for a student who struggles to write, digital stories could be a great way to them to express themselves. The only problem would be many ESL programs lack funding for technology. Do you find that you and your students could access technology to use?
Your experience with ELLs has forged a great understanding of how this assignment will inspire a voice for students. What a wonderful outlet this must have been for the author of "Bruises." Your evaluation of the assessment opened my eyes to things I hadn't considered; if we want students to truly feel comfortable u our assessment must be specific and objective. Great job for your second blog entry
Great job summarizing the story you viewed - I felt like I knew exactly what was happening in the video. Along with KCZAP, I think allowing students to express themselves in other ways without text is great!! There are multiple ways to assess students & giving them a CHOICE on how they can show their understanding is great!! I also liked how you stated how teachers need to be careful on assessing work & being careful on WHAT to assess (not on if a students work is "emotional" enough, but rather on certain elements) - this will allow them to be more creative and comfortable opening up to difficult topics & sharing their lives.
